After being homeless for over 50 years Wayne decided it was time to go inside. The organization Pathways To Housing PA provided him with an apartment and a support team that got him off of the streets and helped him begin the journey of reclaiming his lfe. Pathways currently has a 85% housing retention rate.

After being homeless for over 50 years Wayne decided it was time to go inside. Pathways currently has a 85% housing retention rate. 20 2 At an exit interview in Laural Highlands SCI Earl tells the prison social workers that he doesn't want to leave. After spending the last 50 years of his life behind bars, 75 year old Earl Reinhardt is about to be set free. He is completely unprepared and has no money, no destination, and no family or friends to help him when he walks out the prison door. Earl thinks that if he keeps a low profile and stays quiet they will forget to release him. Since his release from prison , Earl is homeless and living on the streets of Reading, Pennsylvania where he spends most of the day on this park bench. Earl flashes his prison ID photo card when approached. It is all that he has to show for himself. We visit the local deli to catch up since we last met in the prison. Earl talks about how much he misses being in prison. Still wearing his prison jacket only now with his name crossed out, Earl stands underneath an abandoned storefront roof to stay dry. Earl walking around the city of Reading where there is a large homeless population. He eats at local soup kitchens and spends much of the day keeping warm in the library. Earl visits the welfare office to ask for help. He is homeless and needs medicine for his blood pressure. The lines are long and he does not wait in them. Earl fell down a stair case and is being treated in the local hospital for broken ribs ,emphysema, high blood pressure and malnutrition. After an 8 week stay in the hospital, social workers place Earl in a state funded nursing home. Earl is comfortable and is getting excellent health care again. Earl passed away in the nursing home within a year of arriving. Stenton Family Manor in Philadelphia PA. was founded over 40 years ago as a child welfare center where homeless families could find emergency shelter. It now has over 200 people living there. Paulette lives in Stenton Manor with her two children and boyfriend. They are first put into the population room which they share with several other families until a single room is available. The family sets out in the early morning for their different destinations. The commuting involves over two hours of walking, buses and subways. Paulette and her son wait in the subway station to travel across the city to where she is going to a job training class and her son will reluctantly begin a head start program. Her daughter does not want to go to a new school again. Charlie heads out on a bus to look for work. He has to find a job by the end of the week or he will no longer be allowed to live at the shelter. Paulette must walk her daughter into class since she is almost one hour late. The closest elementary school to the shelter is full so her daughter must walk 35 minutes to another one. Paulette's two children racing through the hallways of the shelter. The average age of a homeless person in America is nine years old. Paulette reads a violation letter from Stenton Manor. The family has been given their own room at the shelter which has four beds. They soon lost this room due to a smoking violation and were put back into the population room. Paulette and Charlie go to sign up for a GED class but never went. Paulette moved to South Carolina with the kids to stay with relatives. They could not manage the welfare system and gave up. Mariana Mariana working at the mushroom farm in Kennet Square PA. Mariana is a supervisor at her job and is checking some of the picked mushrooms. Mariana and her family are living the American dream that they hoped would achieve when they immigrated from Mexico. Nineteen year old Tiffany Jefferson holds her daughter while using the office phone in The Sullivan House, which is a shelter for homeless families in Arlington Virgina. She lives there with her two children. Tiffany grew up living in shelters and now finds herself living in one with her two children, one who has many health issues. Tiffany has her hands full with two young children and a new job. In the early morning she sets out to walk her children to the daycare center so that she can begin her new job at The Silver Diner. After dropping off her children at the daycare center, Tiffany gets ready to begin an 8 hour shift at the diner. She checks her appearance in the mirror. Tiffany sweeping at her new job at The Silver Dinner. The cook and Tiffany share a moment. Tiffany appears to like working there and is doing well. When Tiffany arrives back at the daycare center to pick her children up after a long days work ,she breast feeds her baby before they begin the long walk back to their apartment in the shelter. She is in no hurry to leave. It is a long walk from the daycare center back to their apartment. The weather is cold and damp and the young family is not yet used to their new schedule. Tiffany and her son eat their dinner apart from each other. Exhausted from work and taking care of her children , she falls asleep sitting up in the chair while her kids are still very much awake. Tiffany grew on the streets and in shelters. She doesn't know any other life or have family to support her. Her two children are all that she has whom she loves very much. At her young age of nineteen she is doing her best to make a good life for them.
